Manchester United agree to sell Mason Greenwood after interest from host European clubs – But it seems Ligue 1 side Marseille are leading the race to sign the former England international
Since being suspended by the Premier League team in January 2022 following his arrest on allegations of rape and assault, Greenwood has not been on the pitch for United.
Once “new material came to light” and several important witnesses withdrew from the case, all accusations against the 22-year-old forward were dismissed. The athlete refuted every accusation.
After spending the previous season on loan at La Liga team Getafe, Greenwood scored 10 goals in 36 appearances to win the player of the season title from the team.
This summer, Greenwood is reportedly interested in signing with many European teams, including Borussia Dortmund, Benfica, Juventus, and Napoli.
Nonetheless, it seems Marseille, of Ligue 1, is in the lead in the hunt to acquire the former England international.
Indeed, The Athletic reports that Greenwood’s signing to Marseille has been agreed upon with United.
The proposed transfer is subject to Greenwood’s agreement, but Marseille is prepared to pay £26.7 million for the striker, including a sizeable portion of any future sales, with a fixed cost of £23.3 million and add-ons of £3.4 million.
Should a deal come together this summer, the player would report to Roberto De Zerbi, the former Brighton manager who recently took over at the Stade Velodrome.
De Zerbi stated this week that he will not assess Greenwood based on whether or not he joins the French club.
“Mason is a world class player but we have not recruited him yet,” he stated. “I am not sure what went wrong, but I do not usually meddle in my teammates’ personal affairs.
I treat all of my players like my sons, so you have to know that if he comes here. I would never attack them in public, but I can reprimand them in private.”
At the beginning of preseason, Greenwood had discussions with United officials about his next club.
Although Greenwood did not train, The Athletic claims he arrived at United’s Carrington training camp on Monday morning.
Rather, he engaged in “constructive dialogue” regarding his summer transfer to another team with the club’s executive group.
