They may be a good couple, but this dog and the duck are the best of friends.

Four-year-old Pekin Andy and golden retriever Barclay are inseparable despite their love/hate relationship.

Proud owner Pam Ishiguro of Orange County, California, says the animals always call each other when they’re separated.

She said: ‘The animals are a lot like my two children: they have a love-hate relationship.

Inseparable: Any and Barclay often snuggle while playing at their house.

Birds of a feather: They may be a good couple, but this dog and the duck are best friends.

Relaxing: The two animals usually enjoy their free time together on the floor or on the couch.

“When they are together, there is always someone chasing or jumping on another person, but when they are apart, they always call out to each other.

Barclay loves to eat duck chow; Actually, he just likes to eat and he knows that there is always food in the chicken coop, so whenever he has the chance, he talks to the chicken coop and eats the food from it.

He “also likes to drink his bath water and, if he’s sneaky enough, he loves to smell a little duck.”

But the dog and duck couple wasn’t always so friendly. At first, Rudy liked to shoo Barclay away whenever he tried to approach any of the ducks in the group.

Miss Ishiguro explained: ‘Rudy is our alpha duck. He is in charge of everyone and everything.

“When Barclay tries to sniff out any of the other ducks, Rudy is there to stop him. Rudy used to chase Barclay away, and for a long time, Barclay would walk away.

Recently, however, Barclay has decided that he is no longer afraid of ducks, or perhaps the idea of getting some of their food is so exciting that it has given him more courage.

‘Now Rudy has to ‘hook’ Barclay from time to time by climbing on top of him. Barclay doesn’t seem to care much because it gives him a chance to sniff Rudy’s butt, wіn-wіn!

However, the family’s other dog, Izzy, a cross between a Chihuahua and a Tegge, has never gotten along very well with ducks.

Miss Ishiguro added: ‘Barclay was afraid of ducks when they were ducklings. We even tried to show him the ducklings, but he wouldn’t even look in his direction. I think he had always stayed away from ducks until recently.

‘He may have learned that he was watching our other dog, Izzy, who actually caught the ducklings.

“We were afraid Izzy might try to eat one of them, so we always color-corrected Izzy when he was lurking around corners and Barclay must have noticed.

That all changed when the ducklings grew up and became bigger than Izzy. It only took one time for the ducks to chase Izzy to get the message across. Now Izzy is quite afraid of ducks.

Miss Ishiguro explained: ‘Rudy is our alpha duck. He is in charge of everyone and everything.

Although the unconventional family has some conflicts, Rudy and Barclay continue to spend as much time as possible snuggling in each other’s fur and feathers.

Rudy is our official toe biter if anyone gets too close. The other ducks know that Barclay is his best friend, if someone approaches him they better watch out, Rudy will attack without problems.

“Rudy and Barclay need each other, I think that’s why they have such an erotic bond, they’re like the weirdos on the playground. No one else will play with them, lucky for them, they found each other.”
