Days spent in a shelter are sometimes neglected in favor of the long, painful ones of a puppy. These are essential tasks that pale in comparison to love and care. Not to mention the terrible fate that awaits them if they are not adopted into a family.

This is a problem that occurs all too often in high-kill operations. So what happens when an unwanted dog from a shelter is adopted by a family and finds that their life is about to be turned upside down?

A lot has been said about the impact of adoption, but witnessing it for yourself is beyond words. This is the case with Benny, a lovely, calm shelter dog who was adopted from the Carson Animal Care Center in Gardena, California. Benny was basically on death row when he was finally adopted. So how did he respond?

At first, Benny looked like he was bursting with excitement. He’s trying to stay calm as he looks around, sitting as still as he can as he waits to see if it’s his family. But you can tell he’s terrified inside. “Are they mine, am I theirs, is this it?” I see the conversation going something like this.

He’s really trying hard to stay calm. He was practically crying just watching his excitement. Then it happens: the red happily ever after leash is offered and Benny explodes with joy at meeting his new family. As his new family walks him to their car, an instant bond is formed.
