PSG hit the post and bar four times when losing 0-1 to Dortmund in the second leg, total score 0-2, in the semi-finals of the 2023-2024 Champions League.

For the first time in 11 years, since the time of Jurgen Klopp, Dortmund has reached the Champions League final again. The counter-attacking defensive style of Edin Terzic and his team was effective against the host’s star-studded attack. 36-year-old midfielder Mats Hummels shined with the only goal at Parc des Princes, helping the home team win both matches 1-0.

In the 50th minute, midfielder Julian Brandt kicked a corner from the left to the second column, where Hummels used a trick to gently push midfielder Lucas Beraldo. After that, the Dortmund captain comfortably jumped high and headed towards the near corner without being contested. This is Hummels’ first goal in the Champions League after five years.

PSG proved to be unlucky again this season, as they hit the bar 12 times, half of which occurred in the two semi-finals. In the return leg, Luis Enrique’s team hit the crossbar four times, from the feet of Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaire-Emery, Kylian Mbappe and Vitinha, all in the second half.

According to the expected goals index, the total probability of a goal from PSG’s 30 shots in Paris is 322%, which means that normally a team can score three goals. However, the ability to finish and score goals is not present for the home team in this match.

PSG kept the ball 61% of the first half, and scored twice as many shots as their opponents (8 compared to 4). However, the best chance belonged to the away team, when 22-year-old striker Karim-David Adeyemi dribbled the ball from home to the left side of the penalty area, then shot a low cross, but goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma collapsed and pushed it out in time.

Three minutes before Hummels scored, PSG was able to equalize the total score, when 18-year-old midfielder Zaire Emery kicked from close range but bounced off the post. In the 61st minute, left back Mendes shot from about 25 meters away, beating goalkeeper Gregor Kobel, but again failed to beat the post.

Even though the home team was two goals behind, the Parisian audience still simultaneously lit flares in the entire stands behind the goal. They cheered non-stop, helping the players on the field put in their best efforts. Therefore, in the last 30 minutes of the match, PSG kept the ball 84% of the time, finished 20 times, but wasted all opportunities.

Mbappe is expected but does not have much room to perform, only receiving 6.2 points, the second lowest in the team. In a rare situation, he had a chance to shoot smoothly in the penalty area in the 86th minute, but goalkeeper Kobel flew and pushed the ball, hitting the crossbar and rebounding. Two minutes later, it was Vitinha’s turn to shoot from more than 25 meters away, bouncing the ball off the bottom edge of the crossbar but not into the net.

Before the final whistle sounded, Mbappe had the opportunity to rush down to face the goalkeeper, but he lost his breath and fell. The whistle blew, and all Dortmund players ran to the away team’s audience area to share in the joy. Their opponent in the final could be Bayern again, also at Wembley like in 2013, if the “Gray Tigers” beat Real Madrid at the Bernabeu tonight.
