Yatta’s story begins in 1999 near the majestic Yatta Plateau, where she faced the harsh reality of poaching as a young orphan, her mother cruelly taken from her.

Rescued by compassionate souls, she found sanctuary in the Nairobi Nursery, where she began to heal from the wounds of her past.

Under the nurturing care of the Keepers, Yatta blossomed into a beacon of strength and resilience. She emerged as a natural leader with time, guiding fellow orphans and forging deep bonds within the herd.

Her journey paved the way for the expansion of the Orphans’ Project, laying the foundation for the establishment of the Ithumba Reintegration Unit.

Selected as one of the founding members of the Ithumba herd, Yatta assumed the role of matriarch with grace and determination.

Her unwavering empathy and leadership skills became instrumental in successfully reintegrating orphaned elephants into the wild.

In a remarkable display of resilience, Yatta embraced motherhood, welcoming three calves into the world.

Yetu, Yoyo, and Yogi, born of her union with a wild tusker named ‘Dad,’ embody the continuation of her legacy, bridging the gap between human and elephant families.

Recently, Yatta’s family celebrated the arrival of Yebo, her grandson, marking a new chapter in their storied legacy.
