Fans criticize the ‘unreasonable’ referee after Andre Onana successfully saved a Southampton penalty, helping to turn Manchester United’s game around.
Fans are mad at judge Stuart Attwell because Cameron Archer of Southampton had to wait 51 SECONDS to take his penalty against Manchester United.
The score was tied at 0-0 when Diogo Dalot tackled Tyler Dibling of the Saints in the box.
The penalty kick was confirmed by VAR, and Archer took it for the Saints.
When the shooter put the ball down, he had to wait almost a minute before he could take it.
When Archer was finally given a chance to shoot at goal, his weak, low shot was blocked by an eager Andre Onana.
He was able to get on the rebound, but the United custodian caught his shot as well, which made Lisandro Martinez very happy.
There was more than TWO AND A HALF MINUTES between when the penalty was given and when it was taken.
And Southampton fans were furious at Attwell for making Archer wait. One asked, “Why was there such a long wait before he could take it?”
“The box had been checked, and no one was there.” That was silly; it looked like the referee was waiting on purpose.
Someone else wrote, “That’s a shame.” What was the reason for making Archer wait so long?”
“You could see Archer getting angrier as he had to wait,” said a third. This is annoying.”
“You knew he was going to miss,” said someone else. Too long. “Refs need to be more in charge of those situations.”
The Saints got off to a great start and had control of the ball and the attack before the penalty was given.
United spent most of the first 30 minutes stuck in their half, and Dalot had a tough time on the left side of the pitch.
But Premier League football is mean, and Onana’s save changed the tide right away.
Erik ten Hag’s team went ahead 1-0 just two minutes later when Matthijs de Ligt headed in a cross from Bruno Fernandes.
Marcus Rashford then gave the guests a two-goal lead.
It was the 26-year-old’s first Premier League goal since March 9, when he scored a penalty against Everton at Old Trafford.
Garnacho scored the third goal at the very end, and the Saints didn’t even get another SHOT after the penalty.
