A new study by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that the average cost of childbirth in the US is $18,865 under large insurance plans. Though most of that is often picked up by insurance, out-of-pocket payments clock in at an average of $2,854. That includes money spent during pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum-care periods over the course of about three years. Those costs also do not include the amount spent on heath-insurance premiums themselves, or extra bills incurred from out-of-network providers or non-medical procedures and services.
Tennessee-based birth photographer Kalyn Noland’s goal is to capture both the magical and trying moments that come with childbirth. And while she loves photographing the tender moments — like when a mom meets her baby for the first time — there’s also something to be said for the less glamorous parts, such as when you have to push. While photographing Cheyenne Munoz, a new mom who recently welcomed her first son and rainbow baby, Kalyn captured one such moment to show that moms-to-be have options during birth.
“Pushing . . . Did you know that you DON’T have to push with your legs in the stirrups?” she captioned the candid birth photo she shared to Instagram on Feb. 11. For Kalyn, ensuring that soon-to-be moms know they have options is paramount, especially given her experience as a parent.
Birth photography is a highly specialized field and the choice to have the experience documented is an intensely personal decision. It involves the birth process, environment, the parents and those in attendance.
Birth photography encompasses the tears of joy, the wonder of bringing a new life into the world and celebrates family. The photographers who specialize in the field use their art to tell the story of birth.
The winners of 2017 contest have been announced.
