The Birthday I Thought Everyone Had Forgotten.dvh

I woke up this morning feeling a little extra wag in my tail — because today was my birthday!

I stretched, yawned, and trotted into the kitchen, expecting to see balloons, treats, or maybe a special new toy waiting for me.

But… nothing.

Just my usual bowl of plain kibble.

My human was busy tapping away on their glowing rectangle, barely looking up when I sat next to them with my tail thumping hopefully against the floor.

“Hey, buddy,” they said absently, giving me a quick pat on the head.

But not a word about my birthday.

I blinked, my tail slowing. Maybe they were just waiting for the right moment — a surprise, perhaps?

So, I waited.

The sun climbed higher in the sky.

I stared out the window, watching the neighbor’s cat nap lazily on their porch. A bird pecked at the grass. A squirrel darted along the fence, stopping only to flick its tail at me in a teasing little dance.

Still… nothing.

No friends.

No party.

No “Happy Birthday.”

My heart felt heavy.

Did they… forget?

I curled up in my favorite corner, resting my head on my paws.

All I wanted was to feel special, even for a moment.

But just as I was about to drift into a sad little nap—

CRASH!

The back door flew open.

SURPRISE!

I jumped up so fast I nearly tumbled over my paws.

And there, standing in the backyard, was everyone.

Max the Golden Retriever barked happily, his tail wagging like a fluffy flag.

Luna the Husky let out an excited howl, her blue eyes sparkling.

Daisy the Poodle bounced up and down, her pink party hat slightly askew.

And tiny Oliver the Dachshund zoomed in wild circles, already trying to chase his own tail in the chaos.

The backyard was transformed.

Balloons of every color floated in the air, tied to chairs and branches. A giant banner hung across the fence, proudly declaring:

“HAPPY BARKDAY, [Your Name]!”

A long table was covered with doggy delights — pupcakes with peanut butter frosting, crunchy bone-shaped biscuits, and a towering cake made from carrots, apples, and pumpkin.

But the best part? My human stood right in the middle of it all, holding a brand-new squeaky toy.

Did you really think we forgot?” they asked, laughing and kneeling down to scratch my ears.

My tail went into overdrive.

The games began immediately.

First, we had a Zoomie Race — me, Max, and Luna sprinting around the yard while Oliver did his best to keep up, his tiny legs moving at top speed.

Then came a round of Tug-of-War — Daisy and I pulling on one end of a rope while Max grabbed the other, and Oliver latched onto the middle like a furry little anchor.

We all tumbled over in a joyful heap, barking and laughing.

And then… it was time for the Cake Smash.

My human lit a single bone-shaped candle on the cake and began to sing:

“Happy Barkday to you,
Happy Barkday to you…”

My friends barked and howled along, creating the noisiest — but most perfect — birthday chorus ever.

As soon as the song ended, I didn’t wait.

I dove straight into the cake, nose first.

Peanut butter frosting flew everywhere — landing on Max’s ears, Luna’s snout, and Daisy’s fluffy tail.

Even Oliver ended up with a pumpkin slice stuck to his back.

We licked cake off each other’s fur, tails wagging so hard it felt like the ground was shaking.

By the time the sun began to set, I was lying on the grass, my belly full and my heart even fuller.

My human knelt beside me and gently clipped a shiny new tag onto my collar.

It read:

“Birthday Star.”

They kissed me softly on the top of my head. “Happy Birthday, my best friend.

And in that moment, I realized something.

They hadn’t forgotten me.

They had planned the most amazing surprise ever — not just a party, but a reminder that I was loved, truly and completely.

What started as the loneliest birthday became the happiest day of my life.
