While other players were abroad on foreign business, McTominay had the opportunity to demonstrate Mourinho what he could do with the first team. As the young player left practice, he worried if he’d ever be asked to return.
“When I first went over, maybe at the start of the 2017 season, I was going over to train with Jose, and a lot of the lads were on international break,” he explained.

Doing anything you want could be both right and wrong. I disagreed with Michael Carrick and Ashley Young, both older players. I informed them that because you make all the decisions, we lose.
Whatever happens, people will still like you. They will not think you are polite. “Who do you think you are?” he inquired as he placed me down. “You didn’t do anything.”

After a few months, the gym teacher informed me that Jose was only trying me out, which I already understood. It was encouraging to receive positive feedback and know that he was testing out the group.
Since Erik ten Hag took over as Manchester United manager last summer, McTominay has scored five goals this season. The new manager now considers him a vital first-team player.

McTominay believes that Mourinho has made a significant difference in his career. Aside from that, he stated, “You can be humbled so quickly, so don’t get too excited.” I’m grateful that Jose came and let me try.
“My family loves him and I owe him a lot.” My grandfather inspired me to play for Scotland throughout my life. When I decided to play for Scotland, Jose advised me to do whatever felt right. I’m always happy to discuss any options.I entered his office just as he was leaving. I felt terrible. I had to work hard because this individual was so essential to me and helped me achieve all of my goals.
