Savannah James: The Shining Queen Behind Lebron James’ Halo
As LeBron James and his family take on the role of Beats’ first family of brand ambassadors, they recently headlined the company’s latest ad campaign, “The King & The Viking.” While LeBron and footballer Erling Haaland were the main focus, it was Savannah James who truly stood out. We see her briefly, but her voice resonates throughout, motivating her husband to overcome the odds and showcase his talents as he has done repeatedly. The response to this inspiring ad has been overwhelmingly positive, a reaction that doesn’t surprise the mother of three.
“When we were recording the voiceover for the ad, I was struck by how powerful it felt. Hearing my voice alongside Haaland’s father’s voice really added soul to Beats,” Savannah shared with ESSENCE.
For many, this ad may be one of the first instances of hearing Savannah’s voice and seeing her star in a campaign, but it certainly won’t be the last. After years of staying out of the spotlight to raise her children since she was 18, she’s now stepping into it. It’s her time to shine.
In an exclusive interview, Savannah discussed why this is the right moment to step into the spotlight, how she motivates her husband and children daily, and how her values have guided her in raising three well-adjusted kids, maintaining a marriage with one of the greatest basketball players of all time, and avoiding distractions that don’t serve her family.
ESSENCE: In the ad for “The King and the Viking,” we hear you motivating LeBron as he gears up for his 21st NBA season. You also gave an incredible speech after he became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, which was shared widely on social media. How important is it for you to provide positivity to your husband, knowing the immense pressure and negativity that comes with being the world’s biggest basketball star?
Savannah James: It’s extremely important. I make it a point to pour into LeBron and our entire family. It provides us with a sense of grounding. As a mother, it’s my duty to pour into my children, and I do so with pride. That ad was very natural for us, as supporting him daily in that way is just part of our routine. It felt authentic, and I think that came through in the ad.
ESSENCE: Seeing and hearing you in the ad is refreshing. After years of being less visible while focusing on your family, we’re now seeing you step into the spotlight more. Why is this the right time for you to shine as Savannah, with Bronny going to college, Bryce preparing for his next chapter, and Zhuri growing older?
Savannah: When I started having kids, I wanted to be a mom and ensure I raised kind, respectful, and humble human beings. As they’ve grown older, I’ve become more comfortable with this role. With Bronny going to college, Bryce being a high school junior, and Zhuri being nine years old, they understand our family dynamic and what’s expected of them. I don’t feel the need to be a helicopter mom anymore, so I can pursue my passions and explore new interests. The groundwork has been laid, and I feel confident about where they are, allowing me to focus on my passions.
ESSENCE: As a mom, when do you find time to zone out with your Beats Studio Pro headphones or earbuds, and what do you listen to?
Savannah: I’m a Studio Pro girl. When traveling, they’re my best friends. I listen to whatever I’m watching on my iPad or music, especially a good Lo-Fi playlist. It helps me zone out without any external emotions or words. When I wear my Buds, I usually wear one earbud to stay aware of my surroundings while taking calls or doing tasks.
ESSENCE: It’s a mother thing to need soothing music to unwind. What helps you maintain peace, practice self-care, and stay centered amid the years of raising your kids and being in the public eye with your family?
Savannah: Staying true to myself and my core values has been crucial. I give myself grace to learn, make mistakes, and block out the noise. People will have their opinions, but I stay grounded in who I am and give myself the grace to handle whatever comes. The Studio Pros certainly help with blocking out the literal noise too!
