In early November, the little dog suddenly appeared in a South Texas neighborhood, skittering across roads and zigzagging around houses — then she just as quickly disappeared.

They gently approached her, using soft voices and treats to gain her trust. Once they had her secured, they rushed her to a veterinary clinic for immediate medical attention. The vet confirmed that Ana’s ɱaпge was one of the worst cases they had seen. But beyond that, she was malnourished, dehydrated, and showed signs of other minor ailments.

The most concerning thing about Ana was her poor state of health. And no one — not even Stacey Silverstein, the founder of Rescue Dogs Rock NYC — was sure if Ana would make it.

“We take a lot of hard cases … but I honestly thought she was going to die — 100 percent,” Silverstein told Dog Lover Forever. “She had such severe ɱaпge that it was life-threatening.”

Ana’s treatment began immediately. She was administered medications to treat the ɱaпge and was given soothing baths to alleviate the itching. But treating the physical symptoms was just part of the process. Ana was deeply traumatized. She would flinch at sudden movements and was hesitant to trust even those who cared for her.
