LeBron James purchased the home from Lee Phillip Bell, widow of William Bell, creator of soap operas The Young and the Restless and The Bold and the Beautiful. The couple reportedly undertook an extensive renovation to restore the sprawling Mediterranean-style compound to its former glory. The home was listed at $39 million, but it’s unclear if the NBA star paid the full asking price.

Built in the 1930s, the home was originally owned by actor Charles Boyer. When Boyer terminated his contract with Howard Hughes’ RKO Pictures in the 1940s, the deal included the studio buying out his interest in the property. While Hughes himself never lived there, he leased it to former girlfriend Katharine Hepburn, who lived there for several years during the peak of her career. The home went on to have a few non-famous owners before the Bells purchased it in 1986.
