Breaking the Chains: A glimmer of hope appears when a chained dog and her litter find rescue from despair.
The 2-year-old girl was tightly chained to a metal post by the neck in a remote field. The dog had been abandoned with six of her puppies, which were still too small to open their eyes. They were left without food or drink, and her mother was trying to milk her baby while she was tied by the chain that strained her neck.
According to the Irish Times, on November 6, a passerby spotted the helpless nursing mother and her cubs in a field near the small town of Elphin. The individual quickly called for help. The mother and her puppies were taken to a nearby veterinary center run by the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ISPCA).
No one knew how long the family of seven had been trapped there. Rescuers believe the mother and her puppies were abandoned shortly after the mother gave birth, according to the Daily Mail.
The seven canines were sent to the ISPCA National Animal Facility in County Longford for immediate medical care. Fortunately, neither the mother nor her babies suffered any real harm, other than having to endure a period of hunger and bitter cold.
The comments came as the ISPCA shared photos of the adorable, stoic stalker and her baby on Facebook. “This has to be the saddest photo I’ve ever seen, and that says a lot with so much cruelty around us,” said one commenter, “this is horrible, poor mom dog trying to protect her puppies, it’s just shocking. ”.
Although microchipping is a legal requirement in the UK, the dog, nicknamed Emmy Lou by her rescuers, was not microchipped and could not be traced back to her owner.
The puppies’ names are Billy Ray, Dixie, Dolly, Dotty, June and Patsy, and they will all remain at the ISPCA until they are old enough to be adopted.
The ISPCA, like other animal welfare organizations around the world, continues to encourage pet owners to spay and neuter their pets to help reduce the population of unwanted animals.
