Have you ever thought that a class focused on your favorite pop culture icon would make studying more engaging? Well, Swifties who study at De Las Salle University – Dasmariñas Senior High School are having their wildest dreams fulfilled.
DLSU-D SHS is offering a course titled “Speak Now: Swifties Unleashed” that will dive into American pop icon Taylor Swift’s musical artistry. Alongside this, the school is also offering more “eclectic electives” for its upcoming second semester of school year 2023-2024.
In addition to the Taylor Swift elective, DLSU-D SHS is introducing electives focused on Spongebob, K-pop, biking, and cats for the upcoming semester. The school has also previously offered classes on Star Wars, Harry Potter, Disney films, and anime.
Of course, there are also electives tailored to the students’ preferred college programs rather than their interests. Each semester, students are free to choose one elective class.
This course aims to examine how Swift’s public persona can serve as a lens for examining politics, race, gender, class, and more.
For Swifties in college, the University of the Philippines Diliman also announced earlier that they will be offering a course on Taylor Swift for the new semester under the BA Broadcast Media Arts and Studies program.
Additionally, the university is also expected to unveil a study on the P-pop group SB19. UP Diliman has also previously offered a course centered on Korean dramas.
Though it’s unconventional to have pop culture-centric classes, we can appreciate how they can add an interesting dimension to school life. Plus, we’re certainly curious about how pop culture affects our society in ways we often don’t recognize!
