Countless dogs find themselves abandoned and stuck in rescue shelters, often facing the threat of being put down due to costly health problems. However, every furry friend deserves a shot at finding a forever home filled with love and care. Take Gregory, the adorable Beagle, for instance – he was plucked from a shelter just before it was too late thanks to his rescuer, Joe Kirk. In a touching show of appreciation, Gregory wrapped Joe in a warm hug that melted hearts across the internet. This heartwarming moment serves as a gentle nudge to never underestimate the power of second chances and unconditional love for every dog, regardless of their past.
Just when it seemed like all hope was lost for the Beagle, Joe came to the rescue just in the nick of time, preventing him from being euthanized. Together with his wife, Schenley Hutson-Kirk, Joe is the driving force behind Hound Rescue and Animal Sanctuary, a charitable organization based near Findlay, Ohio. Their primary goal is to provide a fresh start to abandoned dogs, whether that means finding them new families or offering a forever home to those who are deemed “unadoptable” or senior. They also assist stray dogs in distress. Through their efforts in rescuing dogs from overcrowded shelters, Joe and Schenley are truly heroes in the animal welfare community. The heartwarming moment when Gregory, the grateful Beagle, shows his appreciation with a hug after being saved is a true testament to their dedication and compassion.

Even though he is currently undergoing treatment for Heartworm Positive, he is surrounded by love and care. Schenley’s Facebook post assures us that Gregory is getting all the support he needs for a happy and healthy future.
“We usually have about 25 to 30 dogs under our care at any given time, with some ready for adoption and others living with us long-term,” the Kirks told Bored Panda. “After we saved Gregory from being put down at the Dog Shelter, we ensured he got the medical attention and heartworm treatment he needed.”
The Kirks added, “Once Gregory finished his treatment successfully, he found his forever home with a caring family who loves him dearly. He is now leading a happy life, with a Beagle buddy in his new home, and they have become inseparable pals.”
“When people ask us how many dogs we have rescued, we always say ‘one more.’ Each dog we save is now safe, receiving the care and affection they deserve. It’s truly fulfilling to know that yet another dog has a loving home and access to proper healthcare,” the Kirks shared. This Beagle was rescued from being euthanized due to his heartworm condition.

She characterized the Beagle as highly affectionate and caring, constantly seeking closeness and showering others with kisses. Joe and Schenley adopted Gregory from the Franklin County Dog Shelter in 2018, rescuing him from being euthanized due to his health problems. Fortunately, the couple chose to bring him into their home and promptly started treatment for his heartworms.

Signs of the disease can include weight loss, lethargy, loss of appetite, reluctance to exercise, a mild cough that won’t go away, a swollen abdomen, and ultimately heart failure.
Petful reports that around 2.7 million out of 7.6 million pets taken to animal shelters are euthanized each year in the U.S. Some reasons for euthanization include contagious illnesses and aggressive behavior, but the main cause is overpopulation, forcing shelters to make difficult choices. Luckily, there are people like Joe and Schenley who work tirelessly to rescue as many animals as they can.
