We love to receive updates from the families of our patients, but we know that the news can’t always be good. Today, we share a story that touches our hearts deeply. On what was supposed to be a day of celebration, beautiful Nelly sadly passed away during the preparation of this story.

Meeting Nelly

We first met Nelly this time last year. She was referred to our Ophthalmology Service late one evening for acute onset glaucoma. Like in humans, glaucoma is a serious eye condition in which the optic nerve, connecting the eye to the brain, is damaged. It’s usually caused by a buildup of fluid in the eye, increasing the pressure and causing extreme pain. Glaucoma can severely affect vision and cause permanent blindness if it’s not caught and treated early.

Nelly’s Treatment

Our Ophthalmologist, Heidi, removed Nelly’s eye in May last year to prevent further pain and complications to her eye health. Nelly was a brave and resilient dog, enduring her surgery and recovery with remarkable strength. Her loving family supported her every step of the way, ensuring she had a comfortable and joyful life despite her challenges.

A Bittersweet Birthday

On the day we intended to celebrate Nelly’s birthday and share her inspiring journey, we received the heartbreaking news of her passing. Nelly’s family reached out to us, expressing their deep sorrow and sharing how much she meant to them. They described her as a loving, gentle, and courageous companion who brought immense joy to their lives.

While we are saddened by Nelly’s passing, we choose to remember the joy and love she shared with her family.
