Cinnamon, a 7-year-old Pit Bull, captured the hearts of many when a video of her at Charlotte Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control (CMACC) in North Carolina went viral. It wasn’t just her slumped-over posture or her sad expression that drew attention—it was her tears. The heartbreaking sight was first noticed by Sarah Sleime, a dedicated volunteer for the Greater Charlotte SPCA, who often visits the shelter. Cinnamon’s story is one of resilience, compassion, and a beautiful new beginning.
Cinnamon’s life before the shelter was filled with hardship. Used as a breeding dog, she was discarded when she was deemed no longer useful—overweight and without her puppies, she was left at the shelter with no one to care for her. Sleime, moved by Cinnamon’s obvious sorrow, shared her story on Facebook, writing, “Someone dumped this poor mama at the shelter, minus her babies. Every time I stopped to talk to her and say I was sorry, her eyes would fill with tears. Heartbreaking!”
The video of Cinnamon “crying” in her cage touched thousands of hearts, and offers to adopt her came flooding in. Among those deeply moved was Meghan Shelton, a friend of Sleime’s. Shelton, who has a special place in her heart for Pit Bulls, knew she had to meet Cinnamon after watching the video. “I think they’re a very misunderstood dog and a misunderstood breed. And when I saw her in that video, literally crying in a cage, I cried. My kids cried. I showed my husband, and he said we could go look at her tomorrow,” Shelton shared.
When Shelton and her family finally met Cinnamon, it was love at first sight. The once sad and slumped-over Pit Bull couldn’t stop wagging her tail, her face lighting up with happiness. It was clear that Cinnamon had found her forever home.
This heartwarming story culminated in a special day—Cinnamon’s birthday. Surrounded by her loving new family, Cinnamon celebrated her birthday in a way that many thought she might never experience. Instead of tears, there were wagging tails, happy barks, and plenty of treats. Her once sorrowful eyes now sparkled with joy.
Cinnamon’s journey from a shelter dog, abandoned and heartbroken, to a beloved family member is a testament to the power of love and compassion. Today, she enjoys the warmth and comfort of a home where she is cherished and celebrated, especially on her birthday. It’s a reminder that every dog, no matter their past, deserves a chance to be happy and loved.
