When she found this brave little Labrador retriever outside a shelter in California, she was ready to give up. Amber was extremely emaciated, weak, and barely able to lift her head.
And then… complete heartbreak!
She had no belongings except for the teddy bear she held close to her. Seeing her tied there, glued to her furry friend, broke the hearts of her rescuers. But that wasn’t the whole story…
In addition to her lust, Amber was carrying a litter !
That same night, when she was found and taken to a shelter in the Bay Area of California, she gave birth to six tiny yellow babies .
“Yellow Labrador retriever Mama Amber was left tied to the shelter fence in the middle of the night, heavily pregnant, and gave birth the next day at the shelter,” the DARP team wrote on Facebook.
Fortunately, the volunteer owls at the shelter kept her company and looked after her throughout the entire process, which made Amber feel a little safer at least.
The next morning, the team at the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project in Somalia County, California decided to take Amber and her babies in after hearing her story.
On her first day of rescue, Amber was (understandably) quite exhausted and stressed.
“During her first 24 hours with us she slept mostly in her warm, quiet bed, exhausted from being left in the shelter with her stuffed animal (which is a good pillow) and from being in labor and caring for the newborns almost immediately,” her caregivers said on Facebook.
She needed time to rest , but even her greed kept her from being a wonderful mother.
She was a devoted caregiver the entire time , making sure her pups were safe and well fed. Unfortunately, shortly after she moved into the new facility, one of her babies crossed the rainbow bridge .
Although this was quite expected, given Amber’s stress levels and the fact that she was emaciated, the distress was enormous.
Both Amber and her children felt empty after losing their furthest family member. However, she needed to keep going, for Amber and her other babies.
After just a couple of weeks, this brave little girl finally emerged from her shell and her charming, gentle nature came to the surface!
Everyone was amazed by Amber’s loving nature and the fact that she was the sweetest girl in the world . Despite her role as a mother, she still acted like a puppy , receiving love and sharing it back with everyone.
But most importantly, her caregivers were extremely happy that Amber and her litter finally got their second chance.
“It’s cold, rainy and windy outside, but Amber’s little family is warm and safe inside. We are so grateful to be able to provide them with a safe and loving home,” the shelter said in a Facebook post.
After a traumatic past that was probably the most difficult part of her life, she and her five babies are finally on the right path .
From now on, you will be waiting for the day when your children will cross that door with their only pleasure: making them permanent members of your family!
