Even though it was a frustrating season at times, Manchester United will always remember 2023–24 with fondness because it was then that Kobbie Mainoo joined the club.

The midfielder, who was just 19 years old, was an immediate mainstay in Erik ten Hag’s starting lineup after an outstanding debut season.

Because of his exceptional talent, Gareth Southgate included him in his Euro 2024 roster, and he continued to amaze when given the opportunity.

Only two players were absent from United’s training session before they returned to Carrington.

After Monday’s practice, Joshua Zirkzee was given the number 11 jersey, leaving Mainoo as the only player without a squad number on his training gear.Several things could be going on with Mainoo’s squad number situation, but one likely outcome is that he will soon receive a new number that better represents his status as a key player for the team.

United will undoubtedly want Mainoo to start in Saturday’s Community Shield match against Man City, so we shouldn’t have to wait long to find out if he’s eligible for a new jersey number.At United, what number may Mainoo switch to?The situation that Alejandro Garnacho went through last summer when he was given the number 17 will be repeated for Mainoo when the numbers are moved.

But Mainoo doesn’t have any great choices right now because more experienced players have taken over positions often occupied by midfielders, such as six, eight, and ten.

While options 18 and 14 are equally viable, they necessitate the sale of players before Mainoo may consider them. One such possibility is 19.

While we don’t yet know for sure, Mainoo’s absence from the training squad has raised the prospect of a new jersey number.
