A puppy, named Ziggy, was discovered in a storage container in an alley. The puppy had large gashes, which appeared to be bite wounds, and hematomas on his ears. Additionally, Ziggy had infections around his eyes and secondary skin infections that had resulted in areas oozing pus. The poor puppy also had parasites, and was placed in the ICU for treatment. Despite his condition, Ziggy showed a good appetite from the first day of his treatment, and even wanted to eat more than he was allowed. However, by the third day, he was diagnosed with puppy strangles, an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks the skin. If Ziggy had received treatment for his condition earlier, it would have been easier to treat.
Ziggy’s condition was so severe that his lymph nodes ruptured, which should have been fatal. Despite this, Ziggy managed to survive the night, which was considered a miracle. After spending six days in the ICU, Ziggy was released but still needed continued care from specialty doctors. Ziggy was then placed in a medical foster home with the TAF therapy dog team. Over time, Ziggy’s health improved, and he even gained weight. However, he still required antibiotics, medicated sprays, pain medication, and medicated ointments twice a day to treat his infections. Additionally, Ziggy received a steroid called Prednisone, which helped calm down his overactive immune system.
Despite the challenges that Ziggy faced, he remained a brave little warrior, and his spirit never wavered. Ziggy continued to take his medication, and his autoimmune disease eventually ran its course. Ziggy’s last dose of Prednisone was taken on day 51, and although his appetite decreased, he was still picky with his food. Ziggy started chewing his skin, which was a downside of his medication. Nevertheless, Ziggy managed to make a full recovery and was seen acting like a puppy again. He had the patience of a saint, and his unique personality shone through. Despite the challenges he had faced, Ziggy had managed to find his way to happiness and a loving home.
