Manchester United Held to 1-1 Draw Against 19th-Place Burnley at Old Trafford
Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation-threatened Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday, in a major blow to their hopes of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League.
The Red Devils took the lead in the 18th minute through Antony, who slotted home a fine finish into the bottom corner. However, Burnley equalized just 12 minutes later through Wout Weghorst, who headed in from a corner.
United dominated possession for the remainder of the match but were unable to find a breakthrough, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes both spurning good chances. The draw leaves United in sixth place, three points behind fourth-placed Arsenal with just three games remaining.
Burnley, meanwhile, are now just two points above the relegation zone. The Clarets have picked up four points from their last two games, and will be hoping to build on this momentum in their bid to avoid the drop.
United manager Ralf Rangnick was left frustrated by his side’s performance, saying: “We should have won this game. We created enough chances, but we didn’t take them. We were too wasteful in the final third.
“Burnley defended well and made it difficult for us to break them down. We had a lot of possession, but we didn’t do enough with it. We’re now in a difficult position in the race for the top four. We need to win our next three games and hope that other teams around us drop points.”
Burnley manager Vincent Kompany was delighted with his side’s point, saying: “This is a massive point for us. We came to Old Trafford and got a draw against a very good team. We’re in a relegation fight, but we’re not giving up yet. We’ll keep fighting until the very end.”
The draw was a major disappointment for United fans, who had been hoping to see their side take a big step towards securing a place in the Champions League. However, with just three games remaining, United’s hopes of finishing in the top four are now hanging by a thread.
