Paul Scholes went viral with a quickly deleted social media post aiming fire at Manchester United starlets Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho on Wednesday. But Mainoo has expressed his admiration for the United legend, naming him as his perfect midfield partner out of the club’s past players.
Scholes hasn’t shied away from airing his honest thoughts about the state of United in their post-Sir Alex Ferguson era since entering the world of punditry after retirement.
And this week, he publicised his disapproval of an image from a recent training session showing Mainoo and Garnacho in action with their coat hoods up while it rained.
Scholes wrote on his Instagram story: “Don’t mind hats and gloves but no way can you train properly with your hood up… standards begin on the training pitch… bye!”

The Old Trafford icon would have undoubtedly been one of Mainoo’s football idols while he grew up supporting the club as an aspiring midfielder.
Scholes lifted 25 trophies under Ferguson between graduating from the Unite
d academy in 1993 and retiring in 2013, including 11 Premier Leagues, three FA Cups and two Champions Leagues.

And Mainoo has name-dropped the 49-year-old as a former player he would want to partner in United’s midfield.
“I’d say Paul Scholes, although there might not be a lot of defending happening between the two of us! [laughs] But, yeah, Scholes. Scholes, definitely,” Mainoo revealed in a Q&A released by United on Thursday.
“[I liked] everything [about his game]. His passing, his movement, the way he could finish. His intelligence, yes, he was a great player.”
Mainoo also named training partner Garnacho as one of his best friends in Erik ten Hag’s squad, having broken through at similar times.
