Elephants have long been recognized for their intelligence and remarkable social abilities, which are evident in the complex societies they form. The endearing aspects of elephant civilization are their deep care and concern for one another.

Emily, an orphaned elephant, had a tumultuous start in life. She accidentally fell into an old pit latrine near a prison camp in Manyani, Kenya.

Fortunately, she was rescued by the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and brought to their Nairobi Park Elephant Nursery, where she spent several years recovering from severe malnourishment. Once fully grown, Emily was released back into the wild.

However, elephants have an incredible memory; as the saying goes, “an elephant never forgets.” To everyone’s surprise, Emily, pregnant with her second calf, made an unexpected decision.

She returned to the Wildlife Trust’s Nursery to give birth. Remarkably, this choice was entirely Emily’s; none of the caretakers had sought her out or tried to bring her back for the momentous occasion. It was indeed a moment of astonishment for everyone involved.

The caretakers at the Wildlife Trust captured this heartwarming event on video and shared it on their website. They described the scene as filled with joyful trumpets and rumbles from Emily’s satellite herd of ex-orphans, who accompanied her back.

They were eager to lend a helping trunk to get the newborn on its feet, gently nudging and using their trunks to lift the precious bundle. The video is a testament to the miraculous unfolding of life.

As a result of this incredible event, Emily now has two daughters, Eve and the newly born Emma.
