Homemade Happiness: Owner’s Dog Birthday Cakes Win Hearts and Paws

You might think they’ve gone barking mad, but this company has started making birthday cakes for dogs.

Llanelli businessman Lee Ewart, of Leesons Aquatics & Pet Supplies, came up with the idea and has turned the backroom of the business into a bakery to make the doggy desserts.

As well as cakes, the 35-year-old, of Hedley Terrace, makes a selection of hand baked treats.

“I went to my mum and dads on holiday in Yorkshire and my mind wouldn’t switch off business, and I came up with this idea of a bakery for dogs,” Mr Ewart told the South Wales Evening Post.

“I phoned up Trading Standards, and they said ‘What a creative idea, here’s your license’. I also got in touch with Defra. Twelve weeks after initial contact they came out and were happy with what they saw.

“”Everything is natural, it is organic flower, free range eggs, and is sugar free, with the topping being yoghurt based and carob powder — which is doggie safe chocolate.

“The bakery has been in operation for a month — and has already received rave reviews from animal lovers.”

What flavour cakes do they do?

The flavours currently available are peanut butter and honey, and peanut butter crispy treats — while sesame seeds and parsley biscuits, cookies and creme and blueberry flavoured treats are all on the way.

What has the reaction been like?

Mr Ewart said: “It has proven to be really popular with people on Facebook. We are currently designing our website as well but we are waiting until we have got a few different flavours going first.

“People have really welcomed it because it’s natural, there are no preservatives — people are favouring natural products these days.

“What I wanted to do originally was just make cakes and biscuits, but it has turned into a full blown business.

“The cakes, in the space of a few weeks, have been really popular, we must have sold 35 or 38 already.
