In Hindu culture, elephants hold a revered status, and India is celebrated as the birthplace of yoga. It’s no surprise to witness elephants engaging in yoga-like practices, embodying ancient techniques with remarkable finesse.
At the Houston Zoo, elephants partake in a unique stretching routine akin to yoga, lasting anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes per session.
These exercises strengthen muscle groups, stimulate their bodies, and invigorate their minds.
Among the participants is Tess, a nearly 40-year-old mother of four and grandmother of one, gracefully showcasing her agility by effortlessly balancing on her head.
In contrast, Methai, a 54-year-old matriarch, adopts a more leisurely approach to the sessions.
Kristin Windle, Elephant Supervisor at the Houston Zoo, emphasizes cultivating strong, positive relationships with the elephants.
Relationships are crucial for providing optimal healthcare and consistently prioritizing the well-being of these majestic creatures.
“The stretching sessions, akin to elephant yoga, play a pivotal role in nurturing a positive bond with our elephants,” says Windle. “By utilizing positive reinforcement, we enhance their flexibility and conduct comprehensive examinations to ensure their overall health and wellness.”
