The player who stood out for Manchester United in their FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City on Sunday was Bruno Fernandes.
There was no doubt that the Red Devils would beat the Sky Blues. They jumped out to a 2-0 lead early on and never looked back.
Coventry made an amazing comeback after United had already taken a 3-0 lead before the hour mark. It looked like United would easily win.
The Championship team deserved to tie the game. They almost won late in extra time, but VAR called the goalkeeper offside, denying them the win.
Mark Robins’ team lost in the end in the spot shootout. Based on how they played after the 70th minute, United was probably lucky to win.
Even so, there were some good things to remember. Fernandes should be praised for another great effort in a very important game for United.
The Portuguese player sent in a beautiful corner that Harry Maguire headed in, and then he scored his own goal with a small deflection in the 58th minute.
In extra time, Fernandes might have been able to win the game for United. His strong shot from the edge of the box went off the wall and out of harm’s way.
The 29-year-old played 123 times and completed 85 passes. He also helped score a goal. He made nine important chances and won six duels.
Fernandes also scored the fourth penalty that put United ahead in the shootout.
Even though the club has a bad defensive record, the €65 million signing has been setting a good standard. He has now been involved in 23 goals this season.
United wants to finish the league season on a high note before the FA Cup final, and fans will be hoping that Fernandes can keep up his recent good play.
